Disney, one of the biggest names in media, is establishing itself in the blockchain world. We’re also going to highlight a new release from Louis King featuring some of the biggest legends in Hip Hop.

🤓 The space is surely growing with more credible entities entering the landscape in consumer-friendly ways. Why does this matter? How could this effect fandom at large? Time to talk about it.

Disney Preparing For A New Era

⛓️ In November 2023, Disney announced that it was releasing a new application with Dapper Labs called “Disney Pinnacle”. They offered a small window for users to sign up to beta testing the app when it was released. That’s now closed to the public, but, don’t worry, you can sign up for the waitlist here.

☕️ This isn't the first time a large company started with a limited number of spots. Starbucks successfully waitlisted thousands of customers in December 2022, inevitably selling out 2000 NFT’s in 20 minutes the following March. They have now amassed over 50 million registered users to their blockchain loyalty program. Seems like Disney is taking notes.

🧐 Okay so who is Dapper Labs and why is Disney working with them? Dapper Labs is the creator of the FLOW Blockchain ($1.4B Marketcap) that has been powering the NBA’s digital trading card experience, NBA TopShot, for 4 years.. yes you read that correctly.. 4.. years. You may not have heard of it because they have been in beta mode this entire time. However, the reason this platform did over $1 BILLION in sales by 2022 was because it offered a unique value proposition to a demographic that ALREADY collected and traded cards.

🏆️ This was made easy by allowing for purchases with U.S. Dollars as well as crypto, and creating a fun “pack opening” experience with a central marketplace to buy, sell, and trade. Ultimately, volume slowed after the bubble burst, but they have continued to flesh out an ecosystem where users can utilizes their cards for daily fantasy competitions or real-world rewards like free NBA League Pass subscriptions and an all-inclusive trip to the NBA Finals. Dapper Labs now has trading card experiences for the NFL, UFC, and more.

👀 Seeing the success of platforms like Starbucks and the NBA, Disney has now decided it’s their turn. Similarly to the American pastime of collecting sports cards, Disney’s platform geniusly caters to the religious, superfan collectors of Disney Pins (PINnacle… haha…get it now?). The obsession made its debut 25 years ago, and, since, there are over 100,000 unique pins that fans collect and trade at conferences and online forums with thousands of threads and millions of messages seeking specific items. Now, Disney is able to offer pins directly to fans from the comfort of their home, while also providing a verifiable secondary market to trade with others. This new blockchain endeavor is targeting an existing demand for a specific product — hardly the money grabs we’re tired of seeing in Web3.

📌 “But.. why would I want a digital pin?” You may ask yourself this legitimate question. For now, the answer is still unclear. However, if we look at Dapper’s history with the NBA Top Shot ecosystem… we suspect Disney fans may find some sought after utility down the road. Here are some *speculations on what these pins *could unlock — redeemable physical pins, deleted scenes from movies, access to special parts of the parks, invitations to premieres or meet-and-greets, fast pass multipliers, free Disney+ subscriptions.

⚡️ Disney owns so many products and services that it can offer insane value for its collectors. This is the power of Web3 at its finest. The ability to track the location and supply of an item, identify your biggest fans and supporters, then directly reward them for being part of your journey. The best part about Web3, however, is that this power isn’t just for the mega corporations…

The Craziest Hip-Hop Album in Web3 Yet

🏆️ Throughout February, we’ve watched independent Los Angeles rapper Louis King harness the power of web3 with the rollout of his new album “Famous in the Metaverse”. Louis has been pulling strings in the music scene for years as a resident artist at multiple LA venues and tour manager for huge acts like Earl Sweatshirt and Anderson .Paak. Now, he has been racking up direct-to-artist sales and bringing Hip-Hop culture to the space through his involvement with popular platform Gala Music.

🌙 Gala Music has quickly risen to a premiere marketplace for professional creatives to sell digital collectibles to their fanbases in addition to existing NFT collectors. The platform has an array of genres like Heavy Metal’s September Mourning, and boasts Hip-Hop releases from Earl Sweatshirt & Alchemist, Mount Westmore, October London, Snoop Dogg and more.

🎧️ The recent releases from Louis King continues this trend with some of the most legendary names in the game — Snoop, Wiz Khalifa, Pusha T, Ab-Soul, Royce da 5’9”, Benny the Butcher, Big Krit, Curren$y, Conway the Machine, and the late DMX. 🤑”Famous In the Metaverse” has a release strategy of 2 songs per week. Each song has been priced at $200 with a total supply of only 100 editions selling like hot cakes. That’s a total of $40,000… try earning that on Spotify in a week. If you can’t afford this price point, don’t worry, you can still listen to the tracks free on the website and Louis earns funds from the streams. Owning the collectible however, gives you a slice of the pie from that stream revenue on top of other perks.

💰️ The most recent drop featuring Snoop Dogg operated slightly differently. They offered $5 mystery boxes to users. In addition to potentially getting the Louis King track at 97.5% discount, massive prizes also included 1M $Gala tokens (~$28k), 100,000 $MUSIC tokens (~$13k), and more. This $5 offer ended up netting nearly $250,000 for Louis and the Gala platform that week.

🤝 Louis still has more releases to go, but the momentum is red hot and shows no signs of slowing down with more star-studded songs ahead. Now, through the Gala blockchain, he is able to verify who his supporters are and reward them with future utilities. We’ve spoken with Louis on what these might be, but he’s asked us to be hush hush for now.
